Awareness Through Movement®

Awareness Through Movement® classes are like little movement puzzles, only there's no one correct answer. As you go about "solving" the puzzle, you learn about your own movement habits. The movements are done very slowly so you can observe yourself and explore doing things in different ways. As you go through a lesson with a gentle, conscious attention, your subconscious mind makes subtle changes.  The lessons often include unfamiliar movements, done with attention to the quality of the movement, which helps you play with new ideas and develop new habits, just like a baby does.

Classes are often done lying on a mat or blanket, but are sometimes done in sitting, kneeling or standing. Wear comfortable clothes in layers, so you can stay warm. It’s a good idea to avoid wearing jeans or a skirt to these lessons, because they can inhibit your movement.

Most of my classes are taught as a short series of one-hour weekly classes, or as 3-4 hour workshops. An ongoing weekly class will be starting soon!

AWARENESS THROUGH MOVEMENT®

  • Uses gentle movement explorations to help you observe what your movement habits are.
  • Explores movements outside your habitual movement, so that you are not “trapped” by your own habits.
  • Helps you find alignment through the architecture of your skeleton, creating more efficient movement and preventing injury.
  • Helps your nervous system to make new connections; this helps with recovering from an injury where you continue to protect the old injury, or to refine your skills in an area you are already good at.
  • Encourages your whole body & mind to work together so that your action matches your intention.
