I have a life-long passion for movement. Starting with ballet lessons at age 10 because of a slight scoliosis, activities like dancing, bike commuting, doing yoga, walking, hiking, and jogging have been very important to me. Throughout my life, staying active - and paying attention to how I move - has helped me to keep all kinds of problems at bay, including depression and back pain. As a social worker, movement is a key way I have been able to continue my sometimes emotionally taxing work.
In
2003 I decided I couldn't keep movement out of my professional life any
longer, and began to seek a movement practice that would incorporate my
social work values, including empowerment, social justice, and
nonviolence. After years of struggling with neck problems, I suffered
a debilitating neck injury. After two months of agony and unsuccessful
interventions, I was referred to a Feldenkrais Practitioner in Portland. I was confused when she moved my ankles in tiny
little movements - she didn't even touch my neck - and yet when I stood up I
had much greater range of motion and the pain was greatly reduced.
After more work with Kim, I was even more impressed with the changes
that were taking place in my self-image and emotional life. I decided
to enter the Victoria Feldenkrais Teacher Training to study with Jeff Haller, PhD.
Professional Experience My social work experience includes work with people experiencing homelessness, parents involved in the child welfare system, survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse, people living with HIV/AIDS, people with addictions, and people living with chronic mental illness. I am now a mental health therapist with Conexiones.
